Lewis & Clark in Space

It all began When Matthew Eickhoff randomly watched a PBS re-airing of Ken Burn's documentary Lewis & Clark: The Journey of the Corps of Discover. From that initial viewing, a conversation began between two artists: Matthew Eickhoff and Ed Funk.

Beyond Graduate Work

Four days before Matthew Eickhoff began a master's program, his close and long time friend, Ed Funk, committed suicide. Their conversation regarding Lewis and Clark occurred only weeks prior to this event, and it would resonate throughout the work created from August 2013 through May of 2015.

Pushing the Stratosphere

One of the goals Eickhoff's graduate work set out to accomplish, was to push beyond identifying as only a painter, and to create as an artist in multiple mediums. Almost immediately the idea of creating a large book to tell the story of Lewis and Clark became the focus, and ultimately through those different art mediums he could address the loss of his friend, Ed Funk.
